When you’re a new parent, you want to do whatever’s necessary to make sure your baby has the best of… well... everything.
The softest of crib-fitted sheets to lay their head on, the best of chemical-free diapers to wear, and the most organic of pureed foods for their first bites.
It should come as no surprise, then, that you also want the best of natural products to treat your baby’s skin.
“Baby skincare” sounds silly or frivolous to some, but it is just as important to take care of their skin as it is yours. And while there are a plethora of baby skin care products out there claiming to contain ingredients (which you never even knew existed) that infants need - you can take care of your bundle of joy with our baby care set for just $38 (plus, take an extra 10% off with code "HAPPYBABY").
Why Is Skin Care Important for Babies?
Modern-day skincare sales are booming for adults with the siren’s song of reducing, even reversing age lines and wrinkles - which sounds like a dream as a sleep-deprived parent, but…
In that respect, why would you even think of buying baby skincare products? Skincare products are so important for maintaining healthy skin, no matter what age you are!
You know the phrase “baby feet soft?” If you’re a parent: of course you do. You can’t keep your hands off your little one’s toes because 1. They’re so darn cute, and 2. They’re so, so soft. Studies show that the reason may lie in the vernix, which is a substance that coats the fetus in the womb and packs a lot of moisture. When a baby is born, the vernix layer is immediately wiped off.
With that being said, a baby’s skin structure is different compared to your own. Because the cells are much smaller and the epidermis 20% thinner than adults’, an infant’s skin can dry out much easier without a moisturizer. On one hand: it absorbs water faster. On the other hand: it also loses that hydration a whole lot faster, too.
The results of dry infant skin can be anything from dry, flaky skin, to painful cracking… Leaving you and your poor baby that much more to cry about.
Getting Picky About the Products
Of course, with all the importance of moisturizing and cleanliness for your baby aside... It doesn’t mean much if the products don’t have quality ingredients to go with it.
Just as it’s important to invest in natural skin care products for yourself, it’s important to invest in them for your baby as well!
You would think that if a product is made for children, the company selling it would make sure to only use clean ingredients… But time and time again, we’re shown that profit is king in the corporate world - even above customer safety. In a study by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a staggering 61% of children’s bath products contained traces of formaldehyde and other harmful chemicals.
Another study found that the average child is exposed to 27 potentially harmful chemicals a day.
We don’t mean to scare you - trust us, we know that as a new parent you have enough on your plate. But we do want to bring awareness to the fact that not all shiny, perfect-looking advertisements promising a baby’s rosy cheeks or perfect hair are as they appear.
UO's Product Trio to the Rescue!
So now you’re probably feeling overwhelmed, right?
You want great products to clean and moisturize your child, but none of the harmful ingredients that can come along with it in big brand names. You don’t want those harmful ingredients, and yet you don’t want to pay an arm and a leg for the good stuff. Having a baby - even though absolutely worth it - is already expensive.
Here’s where we come in with our baby care set. It includes of our three baby products (bundled together in an optional reusable drawstring bag if you're purchasing it as a gift): baby butter, baby oil, and baby wash & shampoo.
Step 1: our baby wash & shampoo. It’s nearing your little one’s bedtime, and you like to start their night routine off right: with a nice, warm-but-not-too-hot bath. Like all of our products, our baby wash & shampoo bar is made with completely natural ingredients. The coconut oil and coconut milk in it are masters of hydrating hair follicles and skin cells, while the gluten-free oats help to gently exfoliate dead skin cells. If your baby is showing early signs of eczema, studies show oatmeal helps soothe the skin!
Step 2: it’s time to lock in more moisture after the bath with our baby butter. Along with that coconut oil (which also has antibacterial properties… In case Baby still isn’t squeaky clean after their bath), we’ve also added shea butter for a velvety smooth finish.
The butter can also be used at any point of the day. Whether he’s feeling just a little dry or you’ve noticed the start of a diaper rash, the calendula oil has antibacterial AND anti-fungal properties that can work wonders.
**BONUS: it also doubles as a safe nipple butter for mamas. No need to wipe off before nursing**
Step 3: last, but not least: our baby oil. Many people prefer to stay away from skincare oils for the greasy residue - and while ours does contain extra virgin olive oil and coconut oil for their hydration benefits, it also contains apricot kernel oil. Apricot kernel oil nourishes the skin with Vitamin C and E. Moreover, it’s absorbed into the skin without an oily residue--reaping all the benefits of a traditional oil without making the skin feel greasy.
Massaging our oil into Baby’s skin has been shown to stimulate his digestive system and ease muscle tension: a winning combo for a good night’s sleep. Add a few drops of lavender essential oil to promote sleep, and we promise bedtime will be much more relaxing for you both!
This winning trio is one of our proudest achievements so far in Urban Oreganics--because habits of good, clean skincare really can start from birth. Whether after bedtime you decide to use our baby butter for your dry hands, or the oil for just that little extra hydration to your own skincare routine…
We promise we won’t tell. But in the meantime: let’s keep your little one's skin baby soft.
